There’s a big lead on the board when it comes to the early game statistics for the home squad here. While the Celtics are the middle of the pack team in both tip wins and first buckets, that won’t cut it against the Cavaliers, who among the league best. In fact, the Cavaliers rank second in tipoff win percentage on teh year with a 83.7% average. They are even better when it comes to scoring first – where they are the best team in the league. They should grab the first possession here and they typically make good use of it. Plus, with the Celtics firing from deep every time out, Cleveland may even wind up with multiple chances here.
It might be a little chalky, but Donovan Mitchell is the play for Tuesday. He’s been getting the bulk of the early work for the Eastern Conference leaders. However, it isn’t just the volume we see lately – it’s also his history with the Celtics. He’s taken the game’s first shot in back-to-back games against the Celtics. Additionally, the Celtics have only given up first scores to opposing guards since January 3rd. That trend should continue here.

On the surface, these two teams look pretty even on the first bucket. The Lakers hold a meager 6.5% advantage on the tip and a 0.2% lead on the first bucket. That’s not enough for a decision on it’s own, but the Anthony Davis trade might be. The less noted change from that trade is the need for Jaxson Hayes to take the jumps for the Lakers. He’s grabbing 80.0% of the tips so far on the year and seems to be contributing to plenty of early Lakers buckets. That should give them the boost they need to get on the board early.
If they are to get on the board first, look to Austin Reaves to be the one to do it. The Lakers’ guard has been getting plenty of action early on in the game. He has taken one of the first three shots for them in two of the last three games. Plus, with Max Christie out of the picture, there might be a few more of those shots that go his way.
